I was delighted to get silver in my first competition of 2024. I entered the Flashpoint Swansea WBL to get some comp practise in early and get the year started on a high note.
I love the BOFF competitions that Flashpoint do. So happy to have secured another silver and my climbing bag is serving me well!

A bit about Mary:
🔸Mary is a 13 year old youth climber who has been climbing for a couple years now. Mary was introduced to climbing when her local wakeboarding centre, Wild Lakes, developed into a small bouldering centre. When the wakeboarding got too cold and the wall was set she couldn’t resist having a go! This started her passion and love for all things climbing
🔸Bouldering drew her in with the concept of projects and how satisfying it is to work towards completing them. The thing that keeps her coming back for more is her constant aim to progress, always getting after the next level, colour or grade, and she’s aiming for the top! Mary enjoys the dedicated and tough training needed to progress when aiming big, as she says “you can probably climb your whole life and you will still be improving.”
🔸Mary’s main motivators for training is getting to the next step of her goals. Her goals for 2024 are to compete in the Junior British Bouldering Championship and the Youth Climbing Series, as well as climbing outside a lot this year
🔸Mary loves competing and feeling the positive performance pressure that motivates her to send.
Hearing people cheer her on in support makes her determined “not to fall off the wall”, which
🔸Mary‘s main advice to stay positive throughout climbing and competing is to try learn from everything “even if you go to a comp and come last, you know what you need to train for in the next one,” as “just going makes you better.”
🔸When competing Mary has her own techniques and rituals to get into the zone. One is to get psyched watching the IFSC World Cup, and the other is wearing gloves in her warmup to keep those hands fresh for the wall!
🔸Mary is a well known climber in our community and is becoming an inspiration for the younger athletes we have here at Swansea.
With that being said, Mary’s own inspiration is the great Janja Garnbret, with her consistency and deep understanding of the wall, even before she has climbed it.
🔸Mary has high dreams, an incredible drive and is full of psyche for her goals and training. You will definitely be seeing more of Mary Falconer.
